Derrick Campana has been living his dream for years, working in animal rehabilitation. Although he started his career helping people, he soon found his true passion in working with animals. Derrick specializes in making prosthetics and orthotics.
Over 10 years ago, a veterinarian recognized Derrick’s talent and reached out to him. At first, Derrick was unsure how his skills would translate to helping a dog, but he was eager to try. He told PBS that he simply wanted to help, even though he wasn’t sure how it would work for animals.
Derrick soon succeeded in making a prosthetic for a dog, and that experience sparked his desire to help even more animals. He now runs Animal Ortho Care, where he has helped thousands of animals. Thanks to Derrick’s work, many animals have had the chance for a better life. He estimates that he has helped over 25,000 animals through his prosthetics.
People contact Derrick every day, seeking help for their pets and even animals from other species. He has worked with dogs, pandas, sheep, and even turtles. He is dedicated to improving the lives of animals, no matter their species or condition.
One of the most rewarding moments for Derrick was when a dog named Hudson received a prosthetic and was able to run again. Derrick recalls the emotional moment when Hudson ran for the first time, saying it was an indescribable feeling of joy.
Hudson, who became a symbol of hope, was even honored with a proclamation in 2015 for his inspiring story. Derrick believes Hudson gives people the strength to face their own challenges, showing them that overcoming obstacles is possible.
Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware that prosthetics and other aids exist for their animals. If more people knew about these options, many more animals would have the chance for a brighter future.
