In over 20 years, a very rare “magic rabbit” has been seen for the first time

The Ili pika, a fascinating and rare creature, was first discovered in 1983. It is one of the most endangered animals on the planet and is known for its charming appearance. This “magic rabbit” was spotted for the first time in over 20 years by Li Weidong, the man who originally found it in the remote areas of northwest China.

Li Weidong has been closely monitoring this species, which now numbers around just a thousand individuals. The population has dropped by 70% since the early 1980s. In an interview with CNN, Li expressed his sadness over the declining numbers of the Ili pika, saying it would deeply upset him if the species disappeared during his lifetime.

Determined to learn more about these unique creatures, Li began researching them in great detail. He gathered a team of 20 people and spent his own money to search for the pikas in an effort to protect them. Despite his dedication, local authorities did not offer him much support.

Li knows that the Ili pika could vanish at any time, and he worries there are no longer any left in their original habitats. Now in his nearly 60s, he understands that he may no longer be able to climb the Tianshan Mountains to search for them. His hope is that some organization will step in to protect the Ili pika and ensure its survival.

The Ili pika once thrived at high altitudes in the Tianshan Mountains, reaching heights of over 13,000 feet.
